The Flaming Lips are coming in November?

This year is to good for live music. It is unfair! I want to save goddamnit!

  • Artist: Mogwai
  • TrackName: Friend Of The Night (Acid Casuals Remix)
  • Album: Travel Is Dangerous

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

I think Mogwai are my new favourite band. Seeing them so soon. Splendour is going to be amazing!!!!

While I am in the mood for ethnic and outlandish music here is the amazing instrument made from a gas cylinder I played at Rainbow Serpent. No instrument I have ever played has been so entrancing.

2. Massive Attack - Heligoland

This is the other obvious entry. Massive attack are pretty much the undisputed lords of Trip-hop. Their dark textures, dub inspired beats and impeccable production values have made them legends. From the first leaking of Paradise Circus, and the “interesting” video that went with it, I was hooked. This album is not Mezzanine but it is nearly on the same level. You might say it is the same room but in order to get to mezzanine you have to walk up a few stairs. Yea, horrible, horrible jokes aside this album is amazing, Massive Attack is amazing and if you think otherwise unfollow me now!
As for the music live. Well seeing Massive Attack was like a dream, it was so unnatural and I thought I would wake up disappointed the next day that I didn’t actually see them. But I saw them and Daddy G is the coolest man on the planet!

3. Tame Impala - Innerspeaker
Coming from the band who already had one of the most solid hits in Alternative Rock since The Vine’s Ride before they even had an album out this was bound to be a good one. High energy Rock’n’Roll with psychedelic elements. There is really not much you can say about this album but it is pretty much universally accepted for the quality it shows. I’ll never forget sitting with splendour buddies from Sydney on the hill and just simultaneously feeling the urge to stand up and dance like dirty hippies. It was, at risk of sounding like a pretentious douche bag, a spiritual experience. Okay maybe not a risk, more a certainty.

4. Olafur Arnalds - …And They Have Escaped The Weight of Darkness
In case you read as badly as I do, no, I have not given an artist two spots in this list. This is Olafur Arnalds, not the aforementioned Olof. They do have some things in common however. They’re both Icelandic and both beautifully serene and they both are involved in the post-rock scene (Olof Arnalds is a touring member of Mum) but this is where the similarities end. Olafur was not always a composer of Orchestral post-rock. He played drums two hardcore/metal bands before releasing his first Solo album of sweeping strings and evocative build-ups in which percussion is only sparsely used and to great effect. …And They Have Escaped The Weight of Darkness, his second album is a beautiful soundscape that bridges the gap between classical music and pop. While Olafur’s fame can be attributed partially to Sigur Ros, as is the case with Amiina, I believe him to be the superior musician with the possible exception of Takk (Amiina were the magic behind that anyway).
By the way how much does the album art remind you of “The Sky’s Gone Out” by Bauhaus?

5. School of Seven Bells - Disconnect from Desire
To begin with I have to thank School of Seven Bells and Prefuse 73. Prefuse, pretty much the best glitch-hop producer around, introduced me to School of Seven Bells about two years ago when I got into him mainly through his remix of iamundernodisguise. Both of these artist contributed into my love for each of them so much and for that I am thankful.
To be honest I kind of forgot about School of Seven Bells, however, I saw them on the Splendour lineup and thought it was the perfect opportunity to get back into them. I remember standing at a stage with not many other people and just getting hypnotised into a dance that lasted their set. They did not play iamundernodisguise, no, it was mostly material from Disconnect from Desire. I only gave it another listen when I came to deciding my Top 10 albums but the fact is it is a hypnotising dreamy pop album and it manages to use live instruments and electronics so much better than a lot of bands out there. Everything feels so tangible no matter how dreamy the music gets and the groove is always extremely subtle but has more power than it would seem.
You can tell I am getting to the good end because I am beginning to ramble.
